Blue Ox Grocery Store Transforms into Unique Retail Experience in Akeley, MN
15 Broadway St E, Akeley, MN
Akeley, MN – April 25, 2025 – Blue Ox Grocery Store, located at 15 Broadway St E, is excited to announce its upcoming transformation into a vibrant, 4,500-square-foot retail destination specializing in pinball machines, jukeboxes, assorted game room equipment, and game room furniture. In addition to a cozy coffee shop offering a variety of beloved coffee types, including rich mochas and lattes, an assortment of snacks, pastries, and soft serve ice cream, the shop will feature an Akeley Artisans section showcasing unique works by local artists and craftspeople. This dedicated area will offer a variety of interesting products, providing a platform for the community’s creativity to shine.
Dan Coulter, the owner, brings a wealth of experience and a deep appreciation for Akeley, having previously owned the Akeley Teen Center in 1980. With over 50 years of working with home-use coin-operated equipment and over a decade in “Brick and mortar” retail, he is well-equipped to create a vibrant hub for entertainment enthusiasts and coffee lovers alike.
“I believe Akeley has so much to offer, and I am excited to bring something new and engaging that will benefit both residents and visitors alike,” said Dan Coulter. “This city has always held a special place in my heart, and I am dedicated to seeing it flourish.”
To ensure convenience for customers, Coulter has also acquired the adjacent parking lot, recognizing that accessibility is vital for retail success. This added space will not only accommodate visitors but will also serve as a venue for community events and gatherings.
As part of this transformative initiative, enhancements will include resurfacing the front-facing area along Main Street to create a welcoming atmosphere that resonates with Akeley’s character. These upgrades are essential in establishing an inviting retail environment for all patrons.
“I recognize the importance of collaborating with the community to make this vision a reality,” added Coulter. “I am eager to engage with local leaders, businesses, and community members to explore collaborative opportunities that will help shape this space into a vibrant retail hub.”

Right Now, after years of neglect, the Old blue Ox is in bad shape and needs an overhaul. The front doors are shot and falling apart. Water lines broken.
